For those who’ve missed it or glazed over our exciting news, breakfast is back at Blue Angel Café on Saturdays & Sundays! Each week our chef extraordinaire, Micah Franz, creates unique breakfast concoctions unlike any other restaurant in Lake Tahoe. Just to give you an idea of some of the AMAZING things he’s created, let’s delve into our freshly made scones.
Scone Of Destiny!
Known as the Scottish “Quick Bread”, the scone started in the early 1500’s and was served typically for breakfast. Supposedly, it got its name from the Stone of Destiny (or Scone), where Scottish kings were once crowned. It wasn’t until the 1700’s that scones became an essential part of tea in England. It was when Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, ordered her servants to bring her tea and some sweet breads, which included scones. She enjoyed them so much that she continued to order them every afternoon, becoming the English tradition of “Afternoon Tea Time.”
A Good Scone Is Hard To Find
We know what you’re thinking… scones are these hard-crusty baked goods that you could build a house out of. Well, for us that’s untrue! Rather, they are soft and tender perfection. A “short” crumbly texture that is light and fresh. We’re pretty sure it’s a scone you’ve never tasted before, unless you’ve been to the United Kingdom.
Why Blue Angel Café’s Scones Are The Best In Lake Tahoe
How could ours be that good? We can’t give away ALL the secrets, but we can give a few hints. First, Micah uses a cheese grater to shave the butter. This makes sure it melts throughout the batter. Second, he only scores the scone batter prior to baking. This ensures that each scone is soft and tender throughout instead of bread-y and tough. As soon as you bite into our scones, you’ll understand that these are something special… a true Tahoe labor of love.
