When you hear the word “Shark”, the first thing that comes to our mind is the movie Jaws and the legendary quote: “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.” But what about eating it? Well, since we’re all about sustainability and conservation, our newest menu item for kids is… Shark!
Whoa, whoa, whoa… aren’t Sharks endangered?
Talking about a “Shark” is much like saying “Bear” or “Horse” – they’re just general named species of animals. There is in fact over FOUR HUNDRED species of shark and yes, there are many endangered, but the Cape Shark isn’t one of them. In fact, it’s one of the most abundant AND underutilized domestic fish species out there. They can be found off the coast of North Carolina to Nova Scotia and are plentiful. They’re even being managed by heavily regulated fisheries to make sure we don’t run into issues in the future. This means you can be conscientious AND create jobs for American fisherman. So, it’s a WIN-WIN!
Ok, I’m curious… how does it taste?
Cape Shark meat is lean, mild and firm with a slightly sweet flavor perfect for fish tenders. In the past few years, this locally landed Cape Shark was exported to Asia for use in shark-fin soups and for fish-and-chips–type delicacies in Europe. Since we’re about global flavors, adding Shark to the menu was a no brainer. We now offer Shark Tenders as a kid’s menu, but don’t worry if you’re an adult. We have quite a few customers that order from the kid’s menu because it’s just as good as the adult choices! So, the next time you’re in for our amazing happy hour specials going through December 15th, try our Shark Tenders like an appetizer-option and enjoy!
